Hotshot trucking insurance, by the numbers.

A one-ton pickup and a gooseneck can still put you under federal rules. Here's when, and how to insure the setup properly.

The short answer

Hotshot insurance covers pickup trucks pulling flatbed or gooseneck trailers for hire. For-hire interstate hotshots over 10,000 lbs GVWR combined need a USDOT number, and with operating authority, federal insurance filings. Most brokers still require $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo.

Who this page is for

Owner-operators running heavy-duty pickups (often Class 3 to 5) with flatbed or gooseneck trailers, hauling equipment, machinery, building materials or time-sensitive freight, frequently in oilfield, construction or agriculture.

Coverage most operators need

CoverageWhy hotshot operators need it
Auto liabilityRequired; brokers usually want $1,000,000
CargoBrokers commonly require $100,000
Physical damageProtects the pickup and trailer
Non-trucking liabilityIf you're leased on

Does a hotshot need a CDL?

If the combined gross vehicle weight rating exceeds 26,000 lbs and the trailer is over 10,000 lbs GVWR, a CDL is generally required. Insurance requirements can apply well below that threshold.

Questions truckers ask

Do hotshot truckers need commercial insurance?

Yes, when hauling for hire. Interstate operations over 10,000 lbs GVWR also need federal filings with operating authority.

How much cargo insurance does a hotshot need?

$100,000 is common for broker requirements; high-value equipment may need more.

Is hotshot insurance cheaper than semi insurance?

Not necessarily. New authorities and long-haul miles can make hotshot pricing comparable.

Do I need a USDOT number for hotshot?

Generally yes, if combined GVWR exceeds 10,000 lbs in interstate commerce.
